Our Company History
Founded in 1959, we've been in the bowling industry longer than almost anyone else.
The Early Years
Bowler, proprietor, coach and inventor, the legacy of Charles Francis “Ace” Mitchell continues to make an impact on the bowling industry today. Ace first started in the bowling business at his father’s two-lane center in Urichsville, Ohio. Ace moved to Akron in 1926 and operated centers throughout the city before opening Ace Mitchell Bowlers Mart in 1957 on Main Street in downtown Akron, Ohio.
One of Ace’s greatest contributions to bowling was the invention of Shur-Hook finger and thumb inserts. As one of the first and best selling bowling accessories ever produced, Ace’s invention helped create an entire new industry of bowling accessories.
A New Leader, A New Direction
Ace retired in 1973 and sold the Bowlers Mart to his son-in-law, Dave Grau. Dave transformed the business into a wholesale supplier, focusing on the local bowling community in northeast Ohio. Dave steadily grew the business by expanding sales territory beyond Ohio.
In 1979, Dave moved the business from its downtown Akron storefront into a modest warehouse facility near the campus of the University of Akron. He maintained one of the best pro shops in the Akron area while expanding his wholesale inventory and continuing to offer bowling apparel, embroidery, trophy making and engraving.
Ace Mitchell Bowlers Mart eventually outgrew its Mill Street warehouse and relocated into a 23,000 square foot facility on the edge of Akron in Springfield township. This large warehouse enabled Ace Mitchell to sustain continued growth while becoming known as the "One Source," able to maintain continual stock of every popular bowling product.
Then in November of 1992, a devastating fire burnt our business to the ground, leaving nothing to salvage. Everything was lost, but that did not stop Ace Mitchell Bowlers Mart from serving the bowling industry. We quickly reopened at a temporary facility in nearby Tallmadge, Ohio, and restocked our warehouse as fast as possible as the company rebuilt. Within months we were in a brand new 27,000 square foot building and continuing to grow.
A New Location and a New Home
In early 2003, Ace Mitchell Bowlers Mart acquired Peter Hakim Enterprises in West Babylon, New York, establishing a strong presence on the eastern seaboard. Back in Ohio, after outgrowing another warehouse, Ace Mitchell Bowlers Mart made a bold move and more than doubled in size by relocating to a 64,000 square foot warehouse in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, just north of Akron.
In 2015, Ace Mitchell’s gained two additional locations in Tennessee and Florida, with the acquisition of Sports Industries of America from a long-time friend in the business, Tom Palmer. Now the company boasts four warehouses throughout the eastern United States with a combined 125,000 square feet of warehouse space.
